Emergency locator beacons (ELBs) are used to alert search and rescue (SAR) teams that you are in need of assistance. They are typically used in remote areas where there is no cell phone coverage or other means of communication. ELBs can be activated manually or automatically, depending on the type of beacon.
There are two main types of ELBs: emergency position-indicating radio beacons (EPIRBs) and personal locator beacons (PLBs). EPIRBs are used by aircraft and maritime vessels, while PLBs are used by individuals on foot.
